The 4th Next-Generation Global Workshop
The Nation-States and Beyond: Private and Public Spheres under Globalization

Overview of the Next-Generation Global Workshops

The purpose of the Next-Generation Global workshops is to enhance our understanding and knowledge of our private and public spheres by providing scholars with an opportunity at an early point of their careers to deliver presentations to an international audience, to exchange opinions with their peers from various parts of the world, and to learn how to participate and communicate in an international academic setting. Our plan is to hold workshops annually for five years, and we are currently already approaching to our fourth workshop.
This year, we aim to focus on the topic of “The Nation-States and Beyond: Private and Public Spheres under Globalization”. The fourth workshop will be held at Seoul National University. Both Seoul National University and Kyoto University have set up the corresponding organizing committees. The committees will organize both the Next-generation Global Workshop and the International Conference as in the previous years.
The Organizing Committee will arrange several sessions in accordance with the topics on which applicants will present. Please carefully note that the procedures of the workshop and arrangements are different from last year in the following application guideline. We look forward to receiving some highly qualified applications.

Application Guideline

1.   Theme
The Nation-States and Beyond: Private and Public Spheres under Globalization

The nation-state used to be the core framework of modernity and development in the twentieth century. In social sciences, it became synonymous with society. It was national society that social scientists – in particular, sociologists, political scientists, and economists –theorized and analyzed as the taken-for-granted unit of civilization and social order.
Since the late twentieth century, however, the so-called globalization in almost all dimensions of human life --industry, labor market, culture, education, social movement, marriage, and so on --has challenged the prime status of the nation-state as the main unit of politics and socio-economic governance. Compared to the dominant role of nation-states a few decades ago, now the intergovernmental organizations, such as EU, are functioning as supranational unit of governance. Also international organizations such as IMF or ASEAN have become increasingly influential even on domestic policies.
On the other hand, the growing transnational or global framework of business, science, and political network, among others, has left increasing numbers of grassroots citizens even in relatively democratic societies disenfranchised from the mainstream economic and political order. However, it is also true that grassroots themselves are striving to globalize their life domains and personal networks in the process of ‘globalization from below’ – global education and international marriage being the particularly prominent indicators. Networks of international NGOs are constructing new forms of counter-governance across national borders.
However, the primary functions and authority of nation-states are not simply declining. For instance, they are still the central unit of social security, managing the matters of social inclusion and exclusion. Some of the states have also attempted to incorporate the process of globalization into their operational goal, often making globalization a fundamentally statist project.
Under these conditions, the private and public spheres of human life are inevitably being restructured in accordance with the reconstruction of relationships among individual citizens, families, communities, nation-states, and global entities. The 2012 Next-Generation Global Workshop focuses on the realignment of relationships among these different entities and its implications on the changing nature of private and public spheres of life. The areas of interests include, but are not limited to, social, cultural, demographic, familial, and historical domains of human life. Possible topics would be,

・State formation and nation building
・‘The social’ in the nation-state
・Intimate/public spheres under the (post-)Cold War
・Global governance and counter governance
・Capital flow, trade liberation and migration
・Globalization and the quality of life
・Social inclusion and exclusion
・Family, home and globalization
・Reconstruction of community
・Social safety net and the role of the state
・Public space of minority groups
・Gender, sexuality and nation-state
・Media and representation of intimacy/public spheres
