Ca’ Foscari University of Venice was established on August 6th 1868 as a “Scuola Superiore di Commercio”, or business college. It was the first educational institution in Italy and the second in Europe to offer higher education in business and economics.

At Ca’ Foscari, scientific research is carried out through departments and numerous research centers that work together on inter-disciplinary projects.
Starting in academic year 2011-2012, Ca’ Foscari organization and educational programs are run by the following structures:
• 8 Departments;
• 5 Interdepartmental Schools;
• Ca' Foscari Challenge School (CFCS);
• Ca' Foscari Summer School (CFSS);
• Graduate School;

Department of Asian and North African Studies

It offers comprehensive, in-depth programs for the study of Asian and North African languages within their cultural, religious, artistic, social and historical contexts. A particular emphasis is placed on examining the political, economic and legal systems of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.

Chinese, Japanese and Korean Studies in the Department are the largest in Italy and, as for number of matriculated students (1808), in Europe. They attract students from every part of Italy and from abroad.

In the Department the following Degree courses are offered:

First cycle courses (3 years) in Languages, Cultures and Societies of Asia and North Africa:
• East Asia (main curricula: Chinese, Japanese, Korean)
• Near and Middle East/South Asia (main curricula: Arabic, Armenian, Georgian, Hebrew, Hindi, Persian, Turkish)

Second cycle courses (2 years):
• Cultural Anthropology, Ethnology, Anthropological Linguistics (ACEL)
• Languages and Civilizations of Asia and North Africa
• Religious Studies (Inter-University Programme)

Research Doctorate in Asian and North African Studies (3 years)
