Research Group: Theory

Research Interests in Global COE:
1. Comparative Research on Internet Cafes in Asia
I have conducted to field survey on mapping Internet Cafes in East and Southeast Asian Countries and have interviewed shopkeepers and customers on Internet Cafes in each country since August 2008. By analyzing survey data, I will try to clarify the diversity of the Internet use in Asia and the specificity of the Internet Cafe space in each Asian country by use of the concepts of intimate and public spheres.

2. Investigation of History of Media Infrastructures from the Comparative Sociological Perspective
In the West, there were various kinds of research on the history of media as the public infrastructures such as highways, gas stations, electricity, and telephones. Referring to these studies, I will describe the diffusion of media infrastructures in Asian countries and clarify the commonalities and differences between the western countries and them.

3. Research on the Relation between Telepathy and the Modern/Contemporary Thoughts in the West
The imagination of telepathy, which implies the medium directly covering infinite distance between real world and another world, living person and a departed soul, appeared in the end of 19th century European countries and U. S.. I will consider (1) the philosophical, social, and media-technological background of this imagination, (2) the relation between telepathy and mass psychology, and clarify the differences between the imagination of telepathy and that of sympathy, empathy and compassion from the perspective of history of thoughts.

4. Critical Research on Max Weber's Thesis Proposed in “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" from the Viewpoint of Media Studies
Max Weber proposed a hypothesis of ‘elective affinities’ between the protestant ethic and capitalist’s “spirit” in his well-known book “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism”. It has been criticized by a lot of socio-economic studies, but there is hardly any research on it from the viewpoint of media studies which ask the diffusion of the Bible and its guidebooks and transformation of protestant doctrines. I will discuss them by comparing those of Jansenism and would like to figure out particularities of modern capitalism of the West.
