Brief Self Introduction

Dr. Jung is a professor of Sociology; he is interested in social history, social movement and Sociology of the body. He developed and applied ‘oral history’ in research areas in Korean Democratization Movement and Hansen’s disease patients. Another field is the comparative studies focusing on colonial modernity. He is currently Vice-Director of Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies and Chair of Dept. of Socioloby from 2009

He hopes that new research fields will be pioneered for the future generations, by strengthening communications between academics and research institutions in East Asia.

Introduction of Overseas Partners’ Institution

The Department of Sociology, Seoul National University was established in 1946, in order to provide important sociological insight for constructing Korean civil society. It is proud of the largest and most established Sociology Graduate Program in Korea. Currently, the Department has fifteen faculty members with an adjunct professor. Each year, 15 students enroll to Masters’ program and; 6 students start PhD program. It is renowned for the researches on social theory, industry/labor, social problem and policy and structural changes. Recently, researches on human rights issues are developing. The Department as well as the University offers internationally competitive scholarships. Each year, two or three foreign students enroll to our program, mainly from Japan and China. The most of modules are taught in Korean but a couple of modules each semester are taught in English, these modules are compulsory. For further information, please visit

In 1966, the Institute for Social Development and Policy Research (ISDPR) was launched as a research center for population and industrialization and other social issues. The ISDPR was named as ‘Future Research Center’ for Seoul National University in 2007. Its project “Social Development and Social Quality: a Comprehensive Perspective on Korea, East Asia and OECD Countries” was granted a nine-year research fund by Korean Research Foundation. Twice a year, It publishes an academic journal, ‘Development and Society’ in English. The journal provides an international and interdisciplinary forum for new research and ideas on social, cultural, political as well as economic development.
