Selected Publications:
The Center for Japanese Studies was established in 1986, when the School of Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific Studies was established.  However, the study of Japan at UHM dates back to 1920 when the University hired its first professor of Japanese studies.   Today, the concentration of faculty members who focus on Japan is the largest in the U.S., with 38 full-time Japanese studies faculty, 14 full-time Japanese language instructors, and a chanoyu (way of tea) instructor who offer approximately 150 courses in 15 department units.  Annually, over 2500 students enroll in Japanese language and literature courses.  The University of Hawai`i Press offers over 500 titles on Japan.  In 2008, CJS played a major role in establishing the Center for Okinawan Studies which is the first Center focusing on Okinawa and Okinawan diaspora outside of Japan.  For more information, see the CJS website, http://www.hawaii.edu/cjs

UHM is the flagship University of the University of Hawai`i System.  UHM is a leader in Hawaiian, Pacific, and Asian studies, as well as fields such as Astronomy, Oceanography, International Business, and Travel Industry Management.  The University offers bachelor’s degrees in 90 fields, master’s degrees in 84 fields, and doctorates in 51 fields.  It also offers 3 first professional degrees (Architecture, Law,  Medicine).  Numbering over 20,000, the student population is one of the most diverse among the country’s campuses; the largest ethnic group is Asian (41% of undergraduate students).  For more information, see the UHM website, http://manoa.hawaii.edu
