Brief Self Introduction


Nirmal Man Tuladhar, MA in Linguistics and MA in English Literature, is a professor of linguistics at Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies, Tribhuvan University <www.cnastu@org.np> . He began his academic career in linguistics as research assistant, assistant lecturer, lecturer, reader and professor of linguistics in 1975, 1977, 1979, 1999 and 2003 to present respectively. He teaches sociolinguistics and field methods at Central Department of Linguistics and Japanese Buddhism as well as Korean Buddhism at Central Department of Buddhist Studies, Tribhuvan University.

He has been editing Contributions to Nepalese Studies (ISSN: 0376-7574), a multidisplinary journal since 1979 as editor, managing editor and chief editor.

He is vice Vice Chair of Social Science Baha < www.soscbaha.org > and Member-Secretary of Linguistic Survey of Nepal <www.linsunproject.org>.

Visiting Professor at Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation (IDEC), Hiroshima University from 2004/4/1 to 2004/9/30, he taught Nepal Studies to grtaduate students. Visiting Professor at Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies (ASAFAS), Kyoto University from 2008/4/16 to 2008/7/15 he started documenting the contributions to Nepalese Studies made my Japanese scholars. He was also Visiting Professor at Social Policy Analysis and Research Centre (SPARC), Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka for two weeks in 2007.

He was coordinator of international conferences such as:

“Nepal Multilingual Education Symposium” organized jointly by Department of Education and Sports/Nepal Government, Tribhuvan University, UNESCO and SIL International, 1 – 3 October 2007, Kathmandu.

“Democratic Transition and Security Reform in Nepal” organized by Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies (CNAS), Tribhuvan University and Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS), Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 28 – September 1, 2006.

“Sustainable Management of Natural and Human Resources for a Better Quality of Life in South Asia” organized by Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies (CNAS), Tribhuvan University and Department of Geography, Mainz University, Germany (DGMUG) on October 14-17, 2000, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Franco-Nepalese Conference on “People, Environment and Landscape of the Himalayas” organized by Environment, Society and Culture in the Himalayas, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies (CNAS), Tribhuvan University on April 19 and 20, 2000, Kathmandu, Nepal.

International Conference on “The Anthropology of Nepal: People, Problems and Processes” jointly organized by Department of Anthropology, The University of Sydney and Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies, Tribhuvan University on September 7 – 14, 1992 at Hotel Vajra, Kathmandu, Nepal.

He was also coordinator of the following projects:

“Social Inclusion Research Project” in collaboration with Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research funded by Social Inclusion Research Fund, 2007 – 2008.

“The (Micro) Politics of Democratisation: European-South Asian Exchanges on Governance, Conflict and Civic Action,” Asia Link Project funded by EU, 2004 to 2007.

“The Impact of Activism in Nepal: An Anthropological and Historical Study” funded by School of Anthropology, Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford University, 2003 to 2006.

Academic Interest and expactions/plans for the GCOE Program

Professor Nirmal Man Tuladhar is committed to contributing to the GCOE program in the following activities:

Coordinating seminar/workshop;
Capacity-building for next-generation human resources; and
Editing the outputs in the form of reports and publications.


Introduction of Overseas Partners’ Institution

In 1969, the Institute of Nepal Studies came into being. On July 16, 1972, the Institute of Nepal and Asian Studies (INAS) replaced the Institute of Nepal Studies under the provision of Tribhuvan University Act, 1971.
On September 8, 1977, the Institute was converted into the Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies (CNAS), a non-teaching centre so that it could concentrate on research.
The Centre functions under an Executive Director who is both its academic and administrative head.

Objectives

  • To plan and conduct research on the problems of national integration and the impact of modernization;
  • To promote and undertake studies on current development issues, ethnic diversity, tradition and change in political values, and cultural studies within Nepal and across other Asian countries;
  • To undertake issue-specific research on environment studies, gender studies, population studies, migration studies, applied linguistics and sociolinguistic studies.
  • To encourage academic exchange with other research organizations within and outside of Nepal;
  • To act as a venue for contact, affiliation and the coordination of research activities of Nepalese and foreign scholars working on Nepalese studies;
  • To maintain a comprehensive bibliographic database on Nepal, SAARC and South Asia;
  • To organize national as well as international seminars on current political and security issues; and
  • To disseminate research works on Nepal through publications.

Affiliation

CNAS is the academic contact point within the Tribhuvan University system for the affiliation of foreign students/scholars working on Nepalese studies. They can seek affiliation with the Centre through the Centre for International Relations, Rector's Office, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Kathmandu. This Centre handles the administrative and operational details, including study visa formalities. A research proposal should be compatible with the objectives of the Centre for affiliation to be granted.

The Centre promotes contact and cooperation with foreign scholars working on Nepalese Studies and foreign institutions both within and outside the country through:

  • Exchange of visiting scholars;
  • Joint training programmes for research scholars - Nepalese and foreign;
  • Exchange of information and publications;
  • Joint study/research projects;
  • Joint seminars.
