GCOE Research Committee: RC Theory

Current Research Subject and Aspirations toward the GCOE
Besides the academic achievements I have obtained in the areas of Cultural Sociology and Media Studies so far, at present I am beginning sociological research on visual image. I would like to examine visual images not only just from the perspective of image reading and decoding, but also taking an overall general viewpoint, considering visual image as an aid in social research, the development of visual image application methods as teaching material and educational media, the preservation and exhibition of visual images, etc.
I am preparing, as a steering committee member, the session titled “Visual Image and the Intimate Sphere” within the context of the “Academic Usage of Images” international symposium, which will take place in Kyoto University in December, 2009.
Also, as president of the executive committee of the Academic Visual Image Competition connected with this symposium, I am in charge of the selection of the material sent from all corners of the world for this purpose.

(1) Sub-Leader(responsible for Publications and Executive Coordinator of the GCOE)
