CIAS海外客員教員セミナー

 East is East and West is West
Today both shall meet facing the challenges of globalization *
Innovations through globalization

  Does acculturation necessarily mean the loss of identity and valuable traditions? Or could the contact between profoundly different societies stimulate a mutually beneficial cultural renovation? And how about the effects of economic crises in the postmodern consumption societies of the USA, Europe and Japan? Do they create new opportunities to strengthen sustainable living?
  Rather than focusing on loss, degrowth and stagnation, this mini-seminar focuses on the dynamics of cultural and behavioral change and discusses the innovative potential of globalization, reporting on studies in Japan. Our visiting scholars, Dr. Larisa Usmanova and Dr. Jeanine Schreurs, will talk on this topic.

Discussion

* Free to Rudyard Kipling (1865-1036) , The Ballad of East and West.
Oh, East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet, Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God’s great Judgment Seat;
But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth, When two strong men stand face to face, tho’ they come from the ends of earth!
